Juni 1868 in Baden bei Wien zur Welt und&nbsp;verstarb am&nbsp;26. Juni 1943 in New York City, im selben Jahr wie seine an Schilddr\u00fcsenkrebs erkrankte Frau.<\/p>\n<p>Der \u00d6sterreicher und US-Amerikaner Karl Landsteiner war ein Mediziner und Chemiker . Er z\u00e4hlt zu den bedeutungswertesten Medizinern der Geschichte.<\/p>\n<p>Karl Landsteiner ging in das Gymnasium in der Wasagasse im 9. Bezirk in Wien, wo er auch die Matura mit ausgezeichneten Erfolg bestanden hatte. Anschlie\u00dfend studierte er Medizin und Chemie und ging f\u00fcr 5 Jahre ins Ausland wo auch seine Forschungen fortsetzte. Er arbeitete vorerst in verschiedenen Laboratorien, unter anderem in Z\u00fcrich.&nbsp;1896 kehrte Landsteiner nach Wien zur\u00fcck und wurde Assistent von&nbsp;Theodor Billroth, einem ber\u00fchmten Chirurgen. Sp\u00e4ter wurde er Assistent an der&nbsp;Pathologischen Anatomie der Universit\u00e4t Wien.&nbsp;1903 habilitierte er zum&nbsp;Professor f\u00fcr Pathologie und erbrachte unter anderem den Nachweis, dass Kinderl\u00e4hmung eine Infektionskrankheit ist.<\/p>\n<p>1916 heiratete er und bekam eine Tochter. Folgend war er Leiter einer Prosektur im Wilheminen Spital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1922 nahm Landsteiner eine Stelle am Rockefeller-Institut in New York an.<\/p>\n<p>Landsteiner entdeckte als erster dass es verschiedene Blutgruppen gibt und nannte sie A,B und C (Blutgruppe C wurde sp\u00e4ter in 0 umbenannt).<\/p>\n<p>Landsteiner entdeckte, dass die Blutk\u00f6rperchen bestimmter Blutproben mit dem Serum bestimmter anderer Blutproben unvertr\u00e4glich war und verklumpten. Er erkannte, dass man nur Blut seiner eigenen Gruppe oder Blut der Gruppe 0 (C) erhalten d\u00fcrfe. Menschen mit der Blutgruppe AB konnten jedes Blut ohne Risiko erhalten. Nur so konnte verhindert werden, dass das Blut der Patient\/innen (die Antik\u00f6rper im Blut der Patient\/innen) mit dem Spenderblut verklumpte und zu t\u00f6dlich endenden Thrombosen f\u00fchrte.<\/p>\n<p>Mit dieser Entdeckung hat Landsteiner Millionen von Leben gerettet. Auch vor Landsteiners Entdeckung der Blutgruppen wurden schon Bluttransfusionen durchgef\u00fchrt. Allerdings waren diese Bluttransfusionen immer mit einem hohen Risiko f\u00fcr die Patient\/innen verbunden. Viele Menschen starben nach einer Bluttransfusion und keiner wusste warum.<\/p>\n<p>1907 f\u00fchrte Landsteiner die erste siegreiche Bluttransfusion der Welt durch. R\u00e4tselhaft blieb, warum dennoch noch immer Menschen nach Bluttransfusionen starben. Landsteiner l\u00fcftete jedoch auch dieses Geheimnis. Er entdeckte, dass nur Frauen, die bereits entbunden hatten oder Menschen, die schon einmal eine Bluttransfusion erhalten hatten, nach dieser (weiteren) Bluttransfusion starben. Landsteiner entdeckte ein weiteres Merkmal der roten Blutk\u00f6rperchen und benannte es nach den Tieren, bei denen er es gefunden hatte: Rhesusfaktor. Nach der Entdeckung von Blutgruppen und Rhesusfaktor stand den sicheren Bluttransfusionen nichts mehr im Wege.
