Im Periodensystem steht es in der vierten Hau ptgruppe oder Kohlenstoffgruppe sowie der zweiten Periode.]Es kommt in der Natur sowohl in reiner Form (Diamant, Graphit) als auch chemisch gebunden (z. B. in Form von Carbonaten, Kohlenstoffdioxid, Erd\u00f6l, Erdgas und Kohle) vor. Aufgrund seiner besonderen Elektronenkonfiguration (halbgef\u00fcllte L-Schale) besitzt es die F\u00e4higkeit zur Bildung komplexer Molek\u00fcle und weist von allen chemischen Elementen die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Vielfalt an chemischen Verbindungen auf.[\/ls_accordion_section][ls_accordion_section title=&#8220;C, das Element des Lebens&#8220;]Kohlenstoffverbindungen bilden die molekulare Grundlage allen irdischen Lebens. Kohlenstoff ist ein essentielles Element der Biosph\u00e4re, es ist in allen Lebewesen \u2013 nach Sauerstoff (Wasser) \u2013 dem Gewicht nach das bedeutendste Element. Alles lebende Gewebe ist aus (organischen) Kohlenstoffverbindungen aufgebaut. Dennoch\u00a0ist elementarer Kohlenstoff anorganisch.[\/ls_accordion_section][ls_accordion_section title=&#8220;Vorkommen&#8220;]Geologisch dagegen z\u00e4hlt es nicht zu den h\u00e4ufigsten Elementen. Man findet Kohlenstoff in der unbelebten Natur sowohl elementar (Diamant, Graphit) als auch in Verbindungen. Die Hauptfundorte von Diamant sind Afrika (v. a. S\u00fcdafrika und die Demokratische Republik Kongo) und Russland. Diamanten findet man h\u00e4ufig in vulkanischen Gesteinen wie Kimberlit. Graphit kommt relativ selten in kohlenstoffreichem metamorphem Gestein vor.
